Saturday (10:30-11:45 am) Level 2: Evaluating Positions & King Safety

No class on November 28, 2020 - Please note, classes typically have a maximum of 12 students per level. We also require a minimum of 6 students for a level; otherwise the section will have to be cancelled or re-scheduled. Please help us plan by registering early.

NSCF Level 2: Evaluating Positions & King Safety

Students who have not completed Level 1 are required to pass a placement test or have instructor permission prior to starting this series of classes.

Part A (7 weeks) – In this course, students will focus on three of the four criteria for evaluating positions: material, mobility and, especially, king safety. They further learn how to create and sustain a direct attack on the opponent’s king. Students will also study in detail one of the classic attacking games of all time.

Part B (7 weeks) – In Part B, we will look at more advanced tactics, define what a combination is, and study other historic games where students assess who is winning on an on-going basis.

At the end of Part B, students will be given an online test. Students passing with a rate of 80% or higher, will receive a Certificate of Completion.

It is expected that students completing this course will be able to look at any position and provide their own assessment of who is winning using the criteria that they have learned. Being able to do this provides a foundation for formulating long-term plans. Upon completion of Part B, students’ chess knowledge should correspond to a US Chess over-the-board rating of approximately 1000.
