NSCF Level 1: Introduction to Chess

Part A (6 weeks) – This class is appropriate for total beginners, and for students who may already know how the pieces move but have limited experience. The NSCF introduces chess by teaching piece movement in a prescribed order that simultaneously highlights relative value. This method lays a strong foundation before we move on to more advanced concepts. Students learn the basics of chess, including the rules, game notation, the value of the pieces, and the ultimate goal (checkmate). They also learn how to checkmate the lone king and how to avoid stalemate. The course continues by discussing opening play and piece development.

Part B (6 weeks) – Students who already have some playing experience, or have already taken a beginner chess course, may start at Part B. Students learn how to select good moves, avoid common mistakes and unforced errors. They look at the role of pawns and examine different pawn structures. The course continues with introducing key tactics (pins, forks battering rams and discovered attacks).

At the end of Part B, students will be given an online test. Students passing with a rate of 80% or higher, will receive a Certificate of Completion.

It is expected that students completing this course will be able to play a game from start to finish with a sense of strategy, rather than making random moves. Upon completion of Part B, students’ chess knowledge should correspond to a US Chess over-the-board rating of approximately 700.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a series of classes. We will not accept students for a single class or on a pro-rata basis.
