Prizes: $300-$200 to Top 2 players in Open, $100 to Top U1800. $200-$100 to Top 2 players in U1600, $100 to Top U1300. Trophies to Top 3, Top U900, U600, U300, Unrated players in U1200. State Champion trophy to Open winner. Unrated not eligible for class prizes.

Prizes based on final standings on USCF tie breaks, NOT USCF distribution rules, except perfect (5-0) scores, who share money prizes equally. Prizes may not be combined; one prize per player in listed order. Prizes may be increased depending on entries. 

Tie break: If there are 2 or more players tied with a perfect (5-0) score, a playoff will determine the section winner and will immediately follow Round 5. See Note [2] below. Other ties determined by US Chess standard tie breaks.

Entry Fee: $40 by May 13; $50 by May 16; $70 ($60 for U1200) by 9:00 am on May 20. Online registration, only. NO on-site registration.

CSCA Member Organization & Premium Member DISCOUNT: CSCA Member Organizations and Premium Members will receive instructions to apply $15 membership discount to their entries. GMs and IMs: Entry fee is waived for GMs and IMs, if registering by May 16. Deducted from prize thereafter. Please email events.CSCA@gmail.com to register. 

2022-23 Champions and 2200+: Players who won any 2022-23 Connecticut State Championship or Tournament—Open/top sections only—and players rated 2200 or higher, receive 50% entry discount. Please email events.CSCA@gmail.com to request additional registration instructions.

Out-of-state: Out-of-state players (see Note [1] below) are welcome and prize eligible, except State title.

Notes:

THIS NONPROFIT EVENT IS ORGANIZED AND SPONSORED BY THE CONNECTICUT STATE CHESS ASSOCIATION AND SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY CHESS. ALL PROCEEDS BENEFIT THE CONNECTICUT CHESS COMMUNITY. This is an official US Chess recognized state championship tournament event to determine the 2023 Connecticut Action Chess Champion.

[1] Connecticut player. For the purpose of these Championships, a “Connecticut player” is 

(a) any player whose state is designated Connecticut (“CT”) with U.S. Chess, or

(b) any player whose state is not designated “CT” with U.S. Chess, but who (i) resides, (ii) attends school or (iii) is employed or self-employed in the state of Connecticut. 

Event entrants pursuant to section (b) will provide proof of eligibility.  

[2] Tie break playoff format. If there are 2 or more players tied with a perfect (4-0) score, a playoff will determine the section winner and will immediately follow Round 4. The playoff format will be G/5/4 d2 Armageddon game, blitz rules apply, with USCF tie breaks determining seeding and choice of color. Playoff pairings will be highest seed against lowest seed and so on. Each playoff round will result in elimination of the losing player(s). Final placement of eliminated players will be arranged in order of seeding based on round of playoff elimination. If the number of players in the initial playoff round is uneven, the highest seeded player(s) will advance without play to the second playoff round. All other ties broken by US Chess standard tie break rules.

[3] Lunch includedA pizza lunch will be provided at no additional cost to players. If additional lunches are needed for accompanying individuals, a $10 per person fee will apply and will be collected at the event in cash. 

[4] COVID-19 Protocols Apply. All applicable Wesleyan University COVID-19 Protocols apply. Current policy requires any unvaccinated (all boosters included) visitors to be masked at all times. 

[5] Rating Supplement. Players’ regular rating and the May 2023 USCF Rating Suppl. will be used for section entry, pairings and prizes. 

[6] Tax requirements. Players receiving total payments of $600 or more from the CSCA in 2023 must submit a W-9 to the CSCA at events.CSCA@gmail.com in advance of receiving prize.

[8] Refunds/Cancellation Policy: To withdraw registration or request a refund, email your request to events.CSCA@gmail.com no later than May 17 at 11:59 PM. Refund requests not received by email or received after the above deadline, will not be honored. Refunds are subject to $15 administrative fee.
